• Nataraja translates to the ” Lord of Dance “. He is a form of Lord Shiva and symbolic of Shiva as Lord of Cosmic Dance and Arts. In the Nataraja form, he stands with his one leg upon Apasmara, who is symbolic of ignorance. The Nataraja form shows Lord Shiva as the creator, preserver and destroyer of the universe in the never ending cycle of time.
  • The gestures of the dance represent Shiva’s five activities (pancakritya): creation (symbolized by the drum),protection (by the “fear-not” pose of the hand), destruction (by the fire), embodiment (by the foot planted on the ground), and release (by the foot held aloft).
